Those Old Cartoon Classics :)

When I was younger, I remember watching the Silly Symphonies and the Fleischer Studios cartoon short films over and over again on our Betamax player. I loved those cartoon shorts.

My kids have been watching a Silly Symphony DVD collection I bought for them a couple of years ago.

The collection  has  The Three Little Pigs (from 1933!), The Big Bad Wolf (1934),  Three Little Wolves (1936), Chicken Little (1943), The Three Blind Mouseketeers (1936), Elmer Elephant (1936) and  Lambert The Sheepish Lion (1952).

Their favorite is The Three Little Pigs. Although not my favorite, I love how the animators before used to add funny (and sometimes disturbing) little details in those old cartoons. Check out their dad’s photo on the wall.

In this one too.

Lambert the Sheepish Lion

Me, I love Lambert the Sheepish Lion. How could you not love his face? :)

I love the song and still sing it sometimes in my head :)

The part where none of the lambs pick the ewe to become their mom always makes me sad.

But I love how she adores Lambert even though he’s different. Being bullied because you’re different is tough so I love how he eventually just laughs it off when he got older.

Plus he’s so adorable when he baa-s in the end.

Ferdinand the Bull

Another cartoon short I like that’s also about being different is Ferdinand the Bull (1938).

I like how his character just does his own thing and doesn’t mind being different from the other bulls.

I enjoyed watching the matador try to make Ferdinand angry and then going crazy from frustration while Ferdinand just finds another flower to sniff.

I loved it so much that I bought the book version of it at a booksale. This is even cuter since the bull on the front cover looks tougher! hahaha.

Little Toot

Another short I remember is Little Toot (1948). Love the intro style and artwork of this and love how the Andrews Sisters sing the story :)

Little Toot also kind of reminds me of my daughter, Adi. hehehe

I was also lucky to find a book of it at another booksale ;)

The Cookie Carnival

I also remember enjoying The Cookie Carnival. Not really for the story but at how beautiful the visuals of this cartoon was. And the Cookie Queen is so pretty! :)

Aside from Disney, I also love those Fleischer Studios (makers of Betty Boop) short cartoons :) Their cartoons always make my cry.

Christmas Comes But Once a Year

One of my favorites is Christmas Comes But Once a Year (1936). It always breaks my heart when the toys of the orphans fall to pieces after only playing with them for a few minutes.

And I love the resourcefulness of the inventor in creating new toys for them :)

This orphan reminds me of how Noah also puts his arms behind his head when he’s comfortable.

See :) hehehe.

Somewhere in Dreamland

Another favorite of mine is Somewhere in Dreamland. I love how the kids here are always in a positive mood no matter what situation they’re in.

The scene where the kids pull up their blanket with all those holes always get to me.

Their adventure in dreamland was magical to me when I was a kid.

And the ending is just the best :)

Anyway, check out the other cartoon shorts on youtube.

Here’s the links – Silly symphony & Fleischer Studios

I’m so glad that people have uploaded these classics that would’ve just been forgotten by the kids now :)

Lalaloopsy Photo Contest

I found out about the photo contest when my mom bought Mati her Lalaloopsy doll for her birthday.

The theme is “Sister’s Day” so we’re supposed to take photos of sisters with their Lalaloopsy dolls :) Perfect! I love contests and I love Lalaloopsy!

Studio photos aren’t allowed so we took photos in my room. Although now, I think they’re room would have been better. hay.

Mati still doesn’t want to open her new doll so they just posed with it in the box. hehe. Their 2 little dolls are in the Ferry’s wheel.

I didn’t like the  background so I asked Ate Kris to hold up Noah’s blanket.

Hmmm. Still not quite satisfied with the background but I guess it’ll have to do.

Took some photos of them on the bed too.

hihihi.

But in the end I chose this one:

The prize is only P5,000 worth of Lalaloopsy toys but I hope they win. If not, at least I’ll have these cute photos of them :D

I have a 5 Year Old!

Yesterday, Mati turned 5 :) But we celebrated last Saturday at my mom’s house

For 5 years now, I have decorated the house the night before her birthday in order to surprise her in the morning. This year, I asked her who her favorite cartoon characters were and had 4 banners printed.

Bloom from Fairy Winx

Ariel

Belle

And a collage of all three of the characters, including the rest of the Fairy Winx fairies

I did all the layout so I only had to pay for the printing of the banners which cost only P126 each (or around $3).

And the printing turned out really well.

She loved the banners when she saw it in the morning :)

Of course she already expected it since I’ve been doing this since she was 1. And what’s a bit sad is that I can still remember the look on her face when she was younger and she first sees the decor in the morning, and that day, it wasn’t the same look on her face anymore.

My little girl is growing up.

Instead of a party, I just organized a playdate for her and a couple of her friends and her cousin.

We served pasta, lumpia, cheese sticks and cupcakes.

I ordered a cake and cupcakes from Mitchelle’s Sweet Kiss

Mati’s favorite gift was this 3D book from her Tita Omma, Tita Jeannie and cousin Fonzy. Thanks guys! :D

It was a hit with the kids

And the grown-ups. hehe. Hi Auntie Reg

My favorite gift was this Lalaloopsy doll from my mom :)

The kids had fun with my mom’s Ann Pamintuan fish decor

And they had fun destroying the crepe paper decor! hahaha

On her real birthday, I just transferred the decor from my mom’s house to our house :)

I also started a new tradition – decorating the photo of the birthday celebrant.

I recently cleaned up this wall that was full of various photos and their artwork and decided to just put 3 framed photos of the kids :)

Mati had already opened her gifts at my mom’s house, but I told her to leave 1 gift so she had something to open on her birthday.

Anyway, next up is Noah’s birthday. And yes, I will be printing banners for him on that day as well :D hehehe.

When Scientists Get Tattoos

While looking for photos of Mitotic Spindles (for a logo. hehe) I came across a tattoo of it.

I have no idea what a mitotic spindle is so this made no sense to me :) Anyway, it was in a site with other hardcore science tats :) Here are some:

Schrodinger’s cat. If not for the show, The Big Bang Theory, I would never have heard of this.

An embryo playing the game of life.

Tat of a physics teacher

DNA tree. a grad student got this tat to commemorate the beginning of his PhD in immunology.

Tat of a Chemical Physicist.

Neurons. Gotten to celebrate passing a neuroscience PhD candidacy exam. It kinda looks like varicose veins though no?

A developmental psychologists Necker cube tat.

Solar system of a guy who has a doctorate in physics.

How Not to Put Lions in Your Ads

While at Resort’s World yesterday we noticed 2 stores with lions in their ads.

One looks really nice with the lion looking very regal.

And the other one just looks really goofy.

Liam looks great but the lion, not so much

I like their clothing but maybe they could’ve chosen a better lion pose for this really big photo in front of their store.

Ronald Ventura Lounges on Locsin Furniture

While getting a foot spa, I was lucky enough to see this issue of Town & Country where Ronald Ventura’s house is featured.

Two years ago Reg told me that he  bought some furniture from us but I never really knew what items he got. So I wanted to see if it was shown in the magazine.

I also remember Reg asking me if I knew who Ronald Ventura was. I said of course! I love his work! And he’s a fellow Thomasian. hehe

Then last year I read that he sold a painting in Hongkong for almost P47,000,000! You can read that story here.

Anyway,  I did see our Sapporo lounge chair and 3 seater in the magazine :) Yay!

Reg also told me that she wanted to get an exchange deal but was too shy to ask. heheh. sayang

The BenCab Museum. A Really, Really Late Post :)

We were in Baguio a couple of months ago. It was 5 days of no internet but it was fun :)

Anyway, at the last minute (about 5 hours before leaving Baguio), me, Reg, Mark, Brian and Richard decided to visit the BenCab Museum.

And we’re so glad that we did :)

The road going there is a bit rough. We even thought we were going the wrong way. But after asking for directions a couple of times, we finally, we saw the front of the museum. If you’re on the road, it’s to your left.

I felt like we were going to a museum in Europe :) Entrance fee was P100, I think.

I thought it was just a collection of Ben Cabrera’s paintings but it turned out to be three floors of his personal art collection made by various Filipino artists.

This painting is so Pinoy.

Artwork acquired from the indigenous people of Baguio.

Tables and a chair made from gin bottles.

I love this piece.

And this

Guitar by Lirio Salvador.

A really, really old table and chairs set.

Some spears that were used for hunting. The shield on the wall to my left was used to hold down a captive while he was being beheaded. Yikes.

Love this bangka bench.

This is the view from the 3rd floor.

Sigh.  . .

Can you find me in this picture? :D

BenCab’s house?

We were lucky to catch this exhibit by Marina Cruz. Almost all the paintings were sold already!

On the top right side is a small photo of the garment which she paints inside out on the left. And at the bottom right there’s a beautiful embroidery of the story of the garment. All of them are from Marina’s childhood.

If I had the money, I would have bought one.

I especially loved the little details in the embroidery.

There’s a cute little cafe at the ground floor called the Cafe Sabel. I like the logo :D

I really wanted to have a cup of coffee but dad was already calling to ask if we were headed back already so I skipped coffee and just took more pictures and explored some more.

Thank you to the guard for this picture of us :) hihihi.

Definitely a must-see the next time you’re in Baguio.

Thanks to my brother, Richard, for all of the photos!! :)

Happy Birthday Mark!

Today the kids made cake and ice cream for their daddy’s birthday. Since they are only 4 and 3 years old, it was only out of clay :)

We thought this would be a nice surprise for him since he’s working in Myanmar till August.

I bought a superhero themed Happy Birthday sign  and the kids filled in the rest :)

They forgot to put Noah’s name again! hahaha.

To our real life superhero, we wish you a very Happy Birthday! We love you and miss you so much! :D

Hope you have a fun birthday touring Myanmar tomorrow! :D
